With such a wide range of laptops and notebooks for sale, understanding the specifications is important before purchasing. 

CPU

The CPU, or “brains” of your computer, greatly affects performance, yet even the cheapest model may be sufficient. 

• Apple M1, M2, and M3: Apple’s unique silicon, the ARM-based M1, M2, and M3 chips outperform the competition in raw performance and durability. Choose Pro or Max if you need additional power for content creation or programming.
• Intel 14th Gen CPUs: Intel’s 14th Gen Meteor Lake processors are being introduced in laptops. If you want a Windows laptop, Intel Core Ultra CPUs with AI may be worth the wait.
• Previous-generation Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake processors power most new laptops. Intel improved their products from the high-end HX series to the balanced P-series and thin-and-light U-Series.
• AMD Ryzen 7000: AMD’s Ryzen 7000 CPUs are only coming out, but the firm claims a 78% jump to top-end CPU performance. If it retains its outstanding battery life, that will be enticing.
• AMD Ryzen 5000 and 6000: AMD’s earlier generations were a huge leap and remain affordable on cheap laptops. Ryzen 5000 and 6000 CPUs are as good as Intel 11th and 12th gen. Ryzen notebooks offer exceptional performance and endurance and are cheaper than Intel ones.
• The Intel Core i9 processor outperforms all other mobile chips. Core i9 CPUs, only found on luxury laptops, workstations, and gaming rigs, are only worth it if you use the most demanding programmes and apps. Commonly have 14 cores.
• Intel Core i7: More powerful than Core i5, models with H use 10–14 cores for faster gaming and productivity. Power and performance are lower in Core i7 P and U series CPUs. Look for Intel’s latest CPUs with a 12 in the model number.
• If you want a mainstream laptop with the best price-performance ratio, get one with an Intel Core i5 CPU. U versions are the most prevalent and have reduced power and performance to conserve battery life, whereas P models use more wattage but are more efficient than the H-Series. 
• A level below Core i5, Intel Core i3 offers similar performance and affordability. Core i5 if you can.
• For large mobile workstations, Intel Xeon CPUs are pricey and powerful. A Xeon is useful for professional engineering, 3D modelling, and video editing, but it has poor battery life and is a heavy laptop. 
• Intel Pentium / Celeron: These CPUs are the slowest yet can handle web browsing and light document editing. Better to pay more for a Core i3 or i5. 

Graphics 

If you’re not playing PC games, generating 3D objects, or editing high-res video, an integrated graphics chip (one that shares system memory) like Intel’s Iris Xe will work. However, you need an Nvidia or AMD discrete graphics processor.

Like CPUs, graphics processors have high- and low-end versions. Low-end gaming or workstation systems currently feature Nvidia GTX RTX A1000 or 3050 Ti GPUs, mid-range models have 4050 or 4050 Ti, and high-end machines have 4070 or higher. Nvidia lists its low-to-high-end graphics chips.

Display

More pixels fit more content on-screen and make it crisper. Unfortunately, some budget laptops still feature 1366 x 768 displays, but if you have the money for it, buy a 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) panel. Premium laptops offer 2560 x 1600, 3200 x 1800, or 3840 x 2160 (4K) screens, which are brilliant but drain battery life. Display quality goes beyond resolution. Check out reviews to see if the laptop you’re thinking about has a good IPS panel’s colour and brightness. Consider an OLED or miniLED display for the finest picture quality, but read reviews carefully since there may be battery trade-offs. 

Touch Screen

Unlike a 2-in-1, a standard clamshell laptop won’t benefit from a touch screen and will have 1–2 hours poorer battery life. Touch screens are standard on 2-in-1s. 

Connectivity

Buy a 4G LTE or 5G laptop for mobile use. You’ll need a data subscription to access the internet without a router. Wi-Fi 7 laptops include the latest connectivity possibilities. Wi-Fi 6e is still better and more prevalent. Remember that you need a Wi-Fi 6e or 7 router to get the performance boost. A laptop with Bluetooth 5.3, is the latest standard that improves Bluetooth connectivity with mouse and headphones.
